Roman Catholic Church of Cioplea

The Roman Catholic church “Holy Virgin Mary, Queen” was founded in 1813 by Bulgarian Catholics settled in the village of Cioplea, on the Dudești estate, after they had fled from south of the Danube during the Russo-Turkish war, led by Passionist monks. The first church, made of wattle and clay, collapsed in 1821, and in 1853 the church burned; its present form dates from 1859, when it was rebuilt with money from Catharina Cardini. For a time, the Bishops of Nicopolis, apostolic administrators of Wallachia, had their residence at Cioplea. The neighborhood was demolished in the 1980s, but the church remained standing, on Aleea Râmnicu Sărat.
