Hagiu Church

Hagiu Church, near Hala Traian, bears the name of an abbot who had been to the Holy Places (a “hagiu”, or pilgrim), at a time when there was a monastery here, under Constantin Brâncoveanu. In 1765–1767, Mihail Băbeanu, a former privy logothete who had become a monk under the name Misail, replaced the wooden church with a masonry one and added six cells for poor widows. Fallen into ruin, it was rebuilt from the ground up in 1872–1874 through the efforts of the priest Ioan Călin Belciugățeanu and of the founder Radu Ștefănescu-Cavafu. It has an inscribed Greek-cross plan, with two small towers flanking the tower over the entrance.
