Popa Chițu Church (Popa Petre)
The first church in this area, attested around 1789–1791 and called Popa Petre after a priest, was surrounded by a cemetery and was badly damaged by the 1802 earthquake. Today's church, known as Popa Chițu, was built in 1813 by two priests, their wives and the shoemakers' guild, and in 1831 it was dedicated to St. Spyridon. A second tower was added between 1878 and 1880, and between 1932 and 1937 Iosif Keber painted it in fresco. The 1975–1980 restoration added a row of 91 niches painted with saints to the facades. Today the church stands on a traffic island, in the middle of the traffic.
