St. Panteleimon Church – Foișorul de Foc
On the site of the church on Iancu Căpitanu Street, near Foișorul de Foc (the Fire Watchtower), there stood a wooden church until 1790, when it was replaced by a masonry one built by the priest Ivan ot Silvestru. Badly damaged by the 1838 earthquake, that church made way for the present one, begun in 1872 to plans by the architect Nae Cucu, finished in 1876 and painted by G. Stoenescu, a pupil of Tattarescu. The church suffered damage in the earthquakes of 1940 and 1977, and in 2012 a fire destroyed the tower over the altar; the towers were rebuilt in metal in 2013.
