Historic building · 1900

Hermann Spayer Palace

The building on Batiștei Street was erected in 1900 for the wealthy landowner and industrialist Herman Spayer (Speier), to plans by the architect Louis Blanc, in the Louis XV style. The interiors are richly decorated with stucco work, bronzes, marble columns, wood paneling and silk wallpaper. It later had several owners, including the Marmorosch Blank Bank, and in the interwar period its image appeared on postcards and in guidebooks. After nationalization, it was used by the communists for official receptions; since 1990 it has housed the “21 December 1989” Association, and between 1992 and 1996 the Romanian Democratic Convention had its headquarters here.
