Statue of Spătar Mihai Cantacuzino

The statue of the spătar Mihai Cantacuzino, in the courtyard of Colțea Hospital, is the first statue ever erected in the city, made between 1865 and 1869, and the first monument commission received by a sculptor in Romania. It was executed in Carrara marble after a model by Karl Storck. The spătar (1640–1716), brother of Prince Șerban Cantacuzino, founded Colțea Hospital, the city's first hospital, in 1704. He is depicted in a fur-trimmed boyar's caftan, with his hands resting on the hilt of his sword. The statue originally stood in front of Colțea Church and was later moved to the axis of the hospital courtyard.
