Iancu Vechi–Mătăsari Church
Iancu Vechi–Mătăsari Church takes its name from Iancu, a Cossack captain mentioned in this part of the city in 1752. The old church was built in 1774–1775 by Dumitru Gheorghe Măcelaru, his wife Gherghina and the priest Ivan, on land donated by Captain Nicolae Petre, and in 1881 it was painted by Gheorghe Ioanid, a pupil of Tattarescu. Weakened by the earthquakes of 1977, 1986 and 1990, it was damaged beyond repair in 2000 by an error made while strengthening its foundation, and had to be demolished. The present cross-shaped church was built between 2004 and 2008.
