Mavrogheni Church
Mavrogheni Church, dedicated to the Life-Giving Spring, was founded in 1786–1787 by Prince Nicolae Mavrogheni and his wife, Maria; at first it served as a monastery, dedicated to a church on the island of Paros, the prince's birthplace. Earthquakes and the 1944 bombings greatly changed its appearance, and of the old decoration mainly the masonry iconostasis has survived, painted in the Baroque style in five registers. The courtyard holds the grave of Ion Heliade-Rădulescu, and the young Constantin Brâncuși sang as a chanter in the church during his years of study at the School of Fine Arts.
