Historic building · 1912–1941

National Museum of the Romanian Peasant

The building on Șoseaua Kiseleff was built between 1912 and 1941 to plans by the architect Nicolae Ghica-Budești, in a Neo-Romanian style of Brâncovenesc inspiration: exposed red brick masonry, arcades and a tower reminiscent of monastery bell towers. It was intended for the museum of folk art founded in 1906, but in 1953 it housed the Lenin-Stalin Museum, and later the Party Museum. On 5 February 1990 the museum returned here under the name Museum of the Romanian Peasant, led by Horia Bernea, and in 1996 it received the European Museum of the Year award.
