St. Elijah Church - Gorgani

The church stands on the site of a burial mound (“gorgan”), from which it takes its name, in a once-poor neighborhood between the Dâmbovița and the pond from which Cișmigiu would later emerge; there has been a church here at least since the 17th century. The old building, which collapsed in the 1802 earthquake, was demolished in 1813 and rebuilt from the ground up by the boyars Manolache Hrisoscoleo, Ștefan and Radu Voinescu, together with the furriers' guild; the inscription bears the date 1819. It has a form rare in Wallachia: a basilica with three naves. In 1937 the funeral of the Legionnaires (Iron Guard members) Ion Moța and Vasile Marin was held here.
