Mihai Vodă Monastery

The monastery was founded by Mihai Viteazul (Michael the Brave) in 1591–1594 on the hill that bears his name, in fulfillment of a vow: legend says that, while being led to his execution, Mihai, then a ban, prayed to the icon of St. Nicholas and escaped with his life. The fortified ensemble later served as a princely residence, a military hospital, a medical school and the headquarters of the State Archives. In 1984–1985 the cells and the Archives building were demolished, and the church, weighing 3,100 tons, was moved 289 m to the east and lowered by almost 6 m, together with its bell tower. Today it stands hidden behind the apartment blocks on Sapienței Street.
