St. John the Great Monastery

On the site of today's CEC Palace on Calea Victoriei stood, until 1875, the monastery dedicated to St. John the Great, whose beginnings go back to the 16th century. The monastery was restored by Constantin Brâncoveanu in 1702–1703, but later fell into decay. In 1875 the church was demolished to make room for the first headquarters of the Casa de Depuneri și Consemnațiuni (Deposits and Consignments Bank), founded in 1864. That building too was soon torn down, and the present palace was built on the same site between 1897 and 1900, to plans by the architect Paul Gottereau.
