Zlătari Church

Zlătari Church, dedicated to St. Cyprian, stands on Calea Victoriei, between Lipscani and Stavropoleos. In 1635 Matei Basarab built a masonry church here in place of a wooden one; it was rebuilt in 1705 by the sword-bearer (spătar) Mihai Cantacuzino. After the earthquakes of 1802 and 1838, the church and the Zlătari Inn were rebuilt to plans by Xavier Villacrosse, and Gheorghe Tattarescu painted the interior. The inn was demolished in 1903 to widen Calea Victoriei, and the towers that fell in the 1940 earthquake were rebuilt only in 1971–1973. The church keeps the reliquary with the relics of St. Cyprian.
