St. Visarion Old Church

The old St. Visarion Church was built in 1797, according to the inscription, by the archpriest of Bucharest and secretary to Prince Alexandru Ipsilanti, during a plague epidemic, as the saint was regarded as a protector against the pestilence. On the same site there had stood a wooden church from the early 18th century and then a masonry one. Badly damaged by the 1838 earthquake, it served until 1913, when the new church opened, and then fell into ruin. In 1964 the communist regime ordered its demolition; only the porch, the pronaos and the stair tower were saved, and the outline of the nave and the altar is marked in concrete today.
