St. Basil the Great Cathedral
The first Greek Catholic church built in Bucharest was erected in 1909, in only seven months, to plans by the architect Nicolae Ghica-Budești, who took as his model St. George Church in Baia, considered a foundation of Stephen the Great. The authorities required it to be set back in the courtyard, 30 m from the street. In 1948 the church was taken over by an Orthodox parish, and Bishop Vasile Aftenie, who served here, was arrested and died as a result of beatings in the Securitate cellars. Returned to the Greek Catholics in 2006, after 14 years of lawsuits, it became an episcopal cathedral.
