Statue of Alexandru Lahovari

The bronze statue of Alexandru Lahovari, a leading figure of the Conservative Party, was made by the French sculptor Antonin Mercié and inaugurated on 17 June 1901 in the square that has borne his name ever since, formerly Piața Dorobanți. Commissioned by the Conservatives in 1899, after Lahovari's death, and paid for by public subscription, it was one of the first statues of a contemporary politician in Romania. Lahovari appears as an orator, accompanied at the base by two allegories: Danubius, the personification of the Danube, and a young woman in national costume offering him a laurel branch. During the communist period the square was named Kuibyshev Square, and later Cosmonauts' Square.
