Monument to Ana Davila

The Monument to Ana Davila, unveiled in 1890, is the work of the sculptors Karl Storck and Carol Storck and stands in front of St. Elizabeth Chapel, in the courtyard of the former Elena Doamna Asylum. The Carrara marble statue shows Ana Davila in folk costume, beside a barefoot orphan girl, a symbol of the girls raised in the asylum she directed. Erected by national subscription, it is the first monument in Bucharest dedicated to a woman. Ana Davila, a granddaughter of Dinicu Golescu and the wife of Doctor Carol Davila, died in 1874 after being given strychnine instead of quinine by mistake.
