Monument to the Engineer Heroes (The Lion)

The Monument to the Heroes of the Engineer Corps, known as “The Lion”, was inaugurated by Prince Nicolae on 29 June 1929, at the intersection of Iuliu Maniu and Geniului boulevards, at the initiative of General Constantin Ștefănescu-Amza. Sculpted by Spiridon Georgescu and cast in bronze, the lion is 5.40 m long, weighs 6 tons and stands on a cannon and an enemy helmet, a symbol of the Romanian army's resistance in 1916–1918. At the corners stand four soldiers on guard: a scout, a pontoneer, a telephone operator and a railwayman. The monument gave its name to Piața Leu and to the nearby student campus.
