Monument to G. C. Cantacuzino

The monument to George C. Cantacuzino-Râfoveanu (1845–1898), a Liberal politician, Minister of Finance and director of the newspaper Voința Națională, was inaugurated in 1904; its bronze bust was cast by the French sculptor Ernest Henri Dubois. At the base, a female figure representing the Press holds a book inscribed with the names of several 1848 revolutionaries, including the Golescu brothers, C. A. Rosetti and I. C. Brătianu. Originally placed in the former Piața Icoanei, which was then renamed Piața Gheorghe Cantacuzino, it was moved in 1930 to the entrance of Icoanei Garden. The names of the 1848 revolutionaries probably explain why it survived the communist period.
