Icoanei Church
The church on Icoanei Street takes its name from an icon dated 1682, which mentions an earlier wooden church built here. The first masonry building was erected in 1784–1786 by Captain Panait Băbeanu, who also added twelve cells for poor widows. Damaged by the 1838 earthquake and reduced almost to a ruin, it was extensively rebuilt in 1873 by the architect Alexandru Orăscu, who gave it its present appearance; the porch was added in 1887–1889. The icon of the Mother of God, kept in front of the altar, still draws worshippers today.
