Stock Exchange Palace
The Stock Exchange Palace was built between 1906 and 1912 at the corner of Doamnei and Ion Ghica streets, on land left vacant after the demolition of the house of the clucer Bărcănescu, where the Senate had once sat. The idea of a headquarters for the Chamber of Commerce was backed by King Carol I in 1904, and the foundation stone was laid in 1908. The architect Ștefan Burcuș, chosen through a competition, designed a building in the French Neoclassical style, with Corinthian columns and pilasters, and the structure was calculated by the engineer Gogu Constantinescu. From 1955 it housed the Central State Library; in 2008 it was returned to the Chamber of Commerce.
