National Bank of Romania Palace

The National Bank Palace on Lipscani Street was built on the site of the former Șerban Vodă Inn, bought by the bank in 1881 and demolished the following year. The design was drawn up by the French architects Cassien Bernard and Albert Galleron, and the work, carried out between 1882 and 1890, was supervised by Ion and Grigore Cerchez. The façade facing Lipscani has statues by Ion Georgescu (Ceres and Themis) and Ștefan Ionescu-Valbudea (Industry and Commerce), and the Council Hall preserves panels painted by George Demetrescu Mirea. The bank's headquarters encouraged the formation of a financial district in the old center.
