Caimata Church

Caimata Church, dedicated to the Dormition of the Mother of God, was built in 1731 by Necula Bozianul, a former chief of the aprozi (court bailiffs), and his wife Stanca, helped by merchants of the neighborhood, as the surviving inscription shows. Here the guild of lăutari (folk musicians) celebrated its patron saint, St. Paraskeva, every year. It was demolished in 1892, under Mayor Pache Protopopescu; the Hotel Modern was later built on its site. The church appears in Caragiale's sketch “Articolul 214” and in Eugen Barbu's novel “Princepele”, and Caimatei Street keeps its name.
