Mărcuța Church
Mărcuța Church, dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, was built in 1586–1587 by the Grand Logothete Dan, during the reign of Mihnea Turcitul, and renovated by Vișana, daughter of the armaș Marcu, from whom the name comes. It is one of the oldest churches in Bucharest preserved close to its original form and has fragments of 16th-century painting. The fortified monastery near Colentina housed a lazaretto during the plague epidemic of 1813, and then, between 1829 and 1924, a hospital for the mentally ill, where Mihai Eminescu was also committed.
