Church moved on rails · 1837–1838; translatată 1984

St. Elijah Church – Rahova

The church was built in 1837–1838 on the site of the church known as Gorgănel, founded in 1706 by Safta, daughter of Constantin Brâncoveanu, and destroyed by the 1802 earthquake. The rebuilding was initiated by the vornic Fotache Știrbei and continued after his death by Bishop Neofit of Râmnic and the ban George Filipescu. The interior was painted in 1874 by Gheorghe Tattarescu. In 1984, for the new Unirii Boulevard, the surrounding buildings were demolished, and the church, saved by the protests of the priest and the parishioners, was moved on rollers about 50 meters, behind the apartment blocks.
