St. John the Baptist Church (St. John New)

St. John the Baptist Church, also called St. John New or St. John–Piață, was built in 1756 by Ioniță Croitorul, head of the dyers' guild, on land belonging to the Biserica Domnească de Jos (Lower Princely Church). After the 1847 fire it was rebuilt in masonry, with two towers, and in 1930–1940 it was restored to plans by Statie Becu and painted by Iosif Keber. Because it stood at the intersection of the great boulevards of the new Piața Unirii, on 30 May 1986 it was moved 23 meters on rails, under the direction of engineer Eugeniu Iordăchescu. Today it stands squeezed between the Unirea and Cocor department stores.
