St. Spyridon New Church

On this site on Calea Șerban Vodă, Prince Scarlat Ghica built a church dedicated to St. Spyridon in 1767–1768, where a princely monastery operated until 1852. The old foundation was replaced in 1852–1858 by the present church, consecrated in 1860: an eclectic building 38 m tall, with a central tower and two towers on the facade, painted by Gheorghe Tattarescu and with stained glass made in Vienna. Damaged by earthquakes and bombings, it became a patriarchal chapel in 1954; after 1977 it was on the list of churches to be demolished, but it was saved.
