St. Catherine Church

As early as the 1570s–1580s there was a monastery on this site, founded by the brothers Albu and Ivașcu Golescu and dedicated to St. Catherine's Monastery on Mount Sinai, which is where its dedication comes from. Rebuilt by the treasurer Pană after the destruction of 1595 and again after the plundering of 1611, the monastery was supported at the end of the 18th century by Lady Ecaterina Ipsilanti. The old church, weakened by the earthquakes of 1802 and 1838, was demolished in 1850, and the present one was completed in 1852 and painted by Constantin Lecca and Mișu Popp. Since 1959 it has been the chapel of the Faculty of Orthodox Theology.
