Monteoru House
The house at 115 Calea Victoriei was built around 1873–1874 for Alecu Niculescu, as one of the wealthy residences that were beginning to change the face of the city. Bought by Grigore Constantinescu-Monteoru, it was radically renovated between 1887 and 1889 by the architects Ion Mincu and Nicolae Cuțarida; the interiors, in the French eclectic style, have painted stucco ceilings, wood paneling and a monumental staircase. Nationalized in 1948, it was the headquarters of the Writers' Union from 1952 until 2013, when it was returned to the heiresses of the Monteoru family.
