Vernescu House

The Lenș–Vernescu House, on Calea Victoriei, was built around 1820 for the boyar Filip Lenș, Grand Treasurer and Logothete of Justice, and was considered one of the handsomest buildings in Bucharest at the time. After his death, a military unit and then the Ministry of War moved in. In 1886 it was bought by the politician Guță Vernescu, for whom Ion Mincu rebuilt it in 1887–1889, while George Demetrescu Mirea painted its interiors. The building has a large elliptical hall at its center; after 1990 it housed the Writers' Union, a restaurant and a casino.
