St. Joseph Cathedral

St. Joseph Cathedral, on General Berthelot Street, is the cathedral of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Bucharest. It was built between 1875 and 1883, at the initiative of Archbishop Ignatius Paoli, to a design by Carol Benesch and the Viennese Friedrich Schmidt, in a historicist style with Romanesque features and Gothic elements. The stone was brought from Ruse, and lack of money and the War of Independence delayed the work. After its consecration, Mihail Kogălniceanu called it, in Parliament, the most beautiful religious building in Romania.
