Dimitrie Gusti National Village Museum
The “Dimitrie Gusti” National Village Museum, on the shore of Lake Herăstrău, was created by the sociologist Dimitrie Gusti and officially opened on 10 May 1936, in the presence of King Carol II. The site plan was conceived by the writer and stage designer Victor Ion Popa, and the funds came from the Royal Cultural Foundation. The peasant houses were dismantled piece by piece in their villages of origin, brought by train, cart or boat and reassembled here; the oldest dates from the 17th century. The museum suffered fires in 1997 and 2002, but has expanded continuously, its latest wing opening in 2016.
