Monument to Engineer Gheorghe Duca
The monument in front of Gara de Nord commemorates the engineer Gheorghe Duca (1847–1899), one of the builders of the Ploiești–Predeal railway and of the port of Constanța, who after 1888 headed the Romanian Railways and the National School of Bridges and Roads, and who was the father of Prime Minister I. G. Duca. It was made in 1904 by the sculptors Dimitrie Paciurea and Filip Marin, together with the architect Ștefan Burcuș. The bronze bust is accompanied, at the base of the pedestal, by a woman with a book and a girl writing the inscription; on the sides are stone spheres bearing the CFR emblem and bas-reliefs with scenes from his work as a professor.
